Rust shows when metal faces are in contact with water which combined with oxygen leads to oxidation. When corroded metal dissolves, a chalky reddish-brown substance appears – what we know as rust.
Easy Ways To Remove Rust
The first step in removing rust would be scrubbing the rusty surface with a wire brush, sandpaper, or a ball of steel wool, especially when the rust is not yet too deep.
Try sprinkling coarse salt and add lemon juice but not too long, then wipe it off and rinse. You can even mix lemon juice with vinegar for a more robust solution.
You can also try making a thick paste out of baking soda, coat the rusted area, and scrub it with a wire brush. This process needs to be repeated several times.
For rusted bolts and nuts, you can use Coca-Cola or similar soft drinks since they contain high levels of phosphoric acid, which is a common ingredient for rust-removal products. However, you might want to try other options first since using soft drinks could be challenging.
Try using white vinegar for more stubborn rusts. You can also soak small items and wipe them off with a cloth. When using vinegar, always make sure that you rinse them thoroughly to avoid damage.
Did you know that the oxalic acid in potatoes can dissolve rust? You can sprinkle baking soda or salt into a raw potato then rub it to the rusted surface.
