Whenever there is a power surge in your power lines, there is a risk that serious damage is done to your electronics. This is especially the case with more expensive items, such as TVs and computers. The best protection that you can have (unless, of course, you disconnect your electronics whenever you aren’t using them, as well as during storms) is to keep the electronics connected to a surge protector.
Surge protectors are designed to protect your electronics against sudden spikes of power, but it is important to remember that the protection they give isn’t complete. After being hit with a number of surges, there will usually be an indicator light letting you know that the surge protector no longer functions as intended. While it still works as a power strip, there is no longer any protection against surges.
At that point, you will need to replace the surge protector to continue to keep your electronics safe.
