Before any significant damages happen, we should know how to identify the source or what could cause them. If you suspect that a simple crack might be the sign of a foundation issue, start filling it in with cement mixture and stop changes in moisture level by having a sound drainage system. Be more vigilant on things that might be an early sign of a roof problem, like missing flashings, curling shingles, or simple stains.

For water damages, watch out for floor damages, odd plumbing sounds, bubbling or peeling paint, and even high water bills. These might be signs of leaking pipes that need immediate repair.

If you see any black spots behind your washing machine or basement window sills, and if you notice poor air quality or experience allergic reactions. Scrubbing away mold that is just starting and fixing the causes of water damage can help prevent a major mold issue from happening.

Covering your bare old wirings might not solve the problem, but this will reduce your fire risk. It is highly recommended to install GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlets in areas where there is water like the kitchen and bathroom.

The main point is, repairing early signs of damage is something that you can do on your own, and it will help you minimize the risk of experiencing more expensive repairs in the future.
