Here in Florida, we’re well-acquainted with the magic of polarized sunglasses and tinted car windows. Since the sun is so bright and, at times, overpowering, we do what we can to protect our eyes and keep indoor temperatures at a comfortable level. Did you know, though, that a similar technology exists for your home or business windows? It’s called Low-E, or low emissivity windows.
The general idea is that these types of windows include additional coatings that help to block the transmission of solar radiation, infrared heat, and ultraviolet rays. And the best part is, these coatings don’t typically affect the visible light transmittance (or, the amount of light that’s let into your home) of the windows. So, it’s not as obvious as darkly tinted windows or sunglasses, but the windows do help to prevent energy loss by keeping indoor temperatures inside, and outdoor temperatures outside. There are different types and ratings for Low-E windows, so be sure to consult a professional for installation.
