There’s a nasty health-related issue lurking around your house. Once you come in contact with it, it can spread very quickly. Believe it or not, we’re not talking about COVID-19! No, we’re talking about the effects of coming into contact with Toxicodendron – or, in terms that you may be more familiar with, poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac. These types of plants secrete a fluid called urushiol, which can irritate your skin and cause symptoms ranging from a minor annoying rash to painful swelling and blisters.
If you have Toxicodendron on your property, it may be a good idea to remove it. If you choose to do so, proceed carefully! Wear appropriate PPE, like gloves, long sleeves, and pants. Wash them and yourself as soon as possible after the deed is done. It’s also important to never burn Toxicodendron plants since the urushiol can travel through the smoke into your lungs and can be extremely dangerous.
